EVEN IF I FALL

Author: Abigail Johnson
Year: January 2019
Genre: Y/A Contemporary Fiction.
Rate: 4.5 stars. 💥💥💥💥and half.

“A year ago, Brooke Covington lost everything when her beloved older brother, Jason, confessed to the murder of his best friend, Calvin. Brooke and her family became social pariahs, broken and unable to console one another. Brooke’s only solace remains the ice-skating rink, where she works but no longer lets herself dream about a future skating professionally.

When Brooke encounters Calvin’s younger brother, Heath, on the side of the road and offers him a ride, everything changes. She needs someone to talk to…and so does Heath. No one else understands what it’s like. Her brother, alive but gone; his brother, dead but everywhere. Soon, they’re meeting in secret, despite knowing that both families would be horrified if they found out. In the place of his anger and her guilt, something frighteningly tender begins to develop, drawing them ever closer together.

But when a new secret comes out about the murder, Brooke has to choose whose pain she’s willing to live with—her family’s or Heath’s. Because she can’t heal one without hurting the others.”

I finished this book I a few days ago, but I haven’t had the time to write the review. Now that I’m sitting in front of my computer, all the feelings I had when I read the last word are back.
I’ve read many heartbroken books, like a lot, but Even if I fall is extraordinarily sad.
From the first page, there is this anguish, guilt, and lost. It was hard to find the threat of hope every story has, but it was there, finally.
Wait, don’t be scared, this book is amazing, with a deep complex plot, more of what it seems to be from the quick look of the blur.
The narrative style is great. Also, it’s the descriptions. The author has the ability to make the reader feels exactly what the character is feeling.
The characters are well done portrayed, each one of them has their own voice, and they’re effective in the part they play in the story.
And the story, well let me tell you, it has a lot. Drama, yes, of course. Romance, kind of expecting but it isn’t the cute kind, it’s intense, tormented and healer. And tragedy, this story tells about two destroyed families by a single act resulted of a growing snowball.
The unfairness of a society, a cruel reality that sometimes we don’t want to see.
There is a message too. It remains us that our action not just affect us but every single person surrounding us, especially our loved ones.
And the twist, OMG. The entire time I was expecting something else. It was a surprise.
What I didn’t like? Repetitions. The Main character was going on and on with the same thoughts, and I think it wasn’t necessary. The reader gets it. And we spend a lot of time inside the MC minds, it can make lose track of a conversation or a scene.
But overall, this book is one of those that you need to read. There is so much emotion in every page that it’s going to make release a huge sigh at the end.
100% recommended.

I received an ARC from Harlequin Teen (US & Canada) through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. And I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

IUSTITIA

I fell in love once, not with a guy but with a girl.
She was strong and powerful,
she was blind, but with a little help, she could see the truth,
she showed me the beauty of values,
she made me believe.
I’m not sure if at some point in my life I lost that love,
I want to think that it went to sleep and
last week when I visited one of her many houses, it woke up.
I walked through the hallways, I entered the rooms,
my eyes filled with tears,
my heart skipped a beat,
her presence was everywhere.
Then, I thought about the possibilities and why not?
Maybe someday, I’ll help her again.

A COWBOY'S SWEETHEART

Author: Crista Mchugh
Year: 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance.
Rate: 3.5 stars.⭐⭐⭐✩

“Pampered New York Socialite and dressage rider, Kensington Pope
has been exiled by her jet-setting parents to her aunt’s Rodeo Academy in Wyoming. She wants nothing to do with the rough and tumble students there, especially one particular handsome cowboy, Javier. But she won’t be there for long. She has a plan in place to break out after her next international competition.
Javier Cruz takes one look at the spoiled city girl and instantly dismisses her. The school of tough knocks has already educated him on what the important things in life are, and he has bigger things on his plate.  He’s counting down the days until his eighteenth birthday when he can pull his younger siblings from the foster care program and reunite his family.  But as he gets to know Kensi, he sees a kindred spirit and discovers there’s more to her than meets the eye.
Kensi begins to question her desire to flee the ranch as her relationship to Javier deepens and she learns the importance of family. But when he discovers her escape plan, will he be able to trust her again? And when tragedy comes to the ranch, will Kensi be able to step up and take her place in the family?”

I read this book in one afternoon and putting aside some repetitions and the excessive background, the narrative is great. Good pace and good dialogues.
I could say that A Cowboy’s Sweetheart is a story about discovering yourself, while you’re growing up but is not. Kensi the main character knows exactly who she is and how much capable she is. Yes, she’s a spoiled child but the pretensions are part of herself and no in a wrong way but in a funny way. I love strong characters and Kensi is a real heroine.
But there is much more in this book, there are compassion, family’s love, romance, (actually the first kiss scene is absolutely adorable,) frightening scene and others sensitive issues that the author handles well.
Now, if it is just for Kensi, this book would deserve a higher rate, but because her love interest, it didn’t happen. Javier just isn’t the best choice for the heroin, his constant change of mind about her made me think he never believed in her and that was just wrong.
Another thing that it didn’t work for me was Uncle Bobby, the character is a jerk. Yes, that shouldn’t be a problem, after all, there are lots of jerk in many books, but in this case, he’s an authority and he behaves like a little boy with a tantrum, plus, when he and Javier talk about Kensi, well let say that, it’s really creepy. And, even when the story shows how important family is, sometimes the family dynamic wasn’t the best. Kensi’s relatives want her to understand their world, but they don’t take their time to understand hers, so it isn’t fair or the best attitude.
I felt like nobody sees the real Kensi.
And the end was chopped when in my opinion the reader should have a little more. However, despite the few things that I wasn’t convinced of, this is a great reading, sweet and heartfelt, with, I insist, a strong heroine, that’s why I full recommended.
Enjoy!

JUST ONE OF THE ROYALS

By: Kate and Leah Rooper.
Rate: 💥💥💥💥
Year: 2018
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance.

“Living a lie so well, it consumed my truth. But lies are empty. And now, I’m left with nothing.”

The perfect summer reading.

Just One of The Royals, is the story of Danil the bastard prince, his love for his family and his journey to find the right answers to where he belongs. And Madison an aspirant actress with big dreams and biggest heart.
I love Prince and Princess’ stories. I like to think that I’m part of those stories and this book wasn’t an exception. It’s cute and funny, actually, it’s hilarious, I found myself laughing to death in multiples scenes. Yes, there is some resemblance to The Princess Diaries but with unique statements.
The characters are great and the narrative flows really well. But there is more, much more: Intrigue, a mean Queen, a villain, friendship turned into romance and loyalty.
My only concerns were the slow pace at the beginning and the abruptly end. Also, this book is supposed to be standalone, but I feel like I needed to read the first one Just One of the Boys in order to have a better understanding of Hayden and Alice relationship, which shouldn’t be necessary. Although, it got me curious about the book and I I’m going to read it, as I’m going to read the next one Just One of the Falcon which tells Eva and Tyler’ story.
If you are looking for a sweet read, fresh and cute to spend a relaxing afternoon under a tree, this book is for you.
100% Recommended.

ONE OF THE GUYS

BY: Lisa Aldin
Genre: Contemporary Romance.
Year: 2015
Rate:💥💥💥💥💥

Five stars because of what this book made me feel.
Five stars because the swollen in my heart, the tears in my eyes, and the smile on my lips.
Yes, maybe there are some things that I would enjoy better if they were addressed in a different direction, but this book is like life, we don’t always get what we want, however, that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be great.
People always talk about changes, about the fear of growing up, of losing ourself or not recognize who we are. There are plenty of books about this topic, I’ve read many of them, nevertheless One of the guys, is one of the best.
The narrative is great, the plot is simple but effective, the dialogues, the characters are well done written, especially Toni. Even when I thought she seems younger than what her character represents, It’s impossible not to feel a connection with her with her honesty, her heart full of love and her desperation for clinging to what she always knew.
I always say, I’m a believer of new beginning and second chance. Now with this book, I also believe in moving on, keep going, treasure your past and look at to the future.
And I also believe that friendship can change that’s inevitable, but the links between real friends are stronger than steel. Okay, this last part is a little cheese, Toni wouldn’t like it, or maybe she will, after all, she has changed.
100% recommended. It will worth your time.
Best Phrases:
“This is the part where I say good bye to my childhood existence. This is the part where everyone is different. No turning back. No clinging to what once was.”
“Maybe change doesn’t have to mean growing apart. Maybe  it can mean growing closer.”

SPIES, LIES, AND ALLIES

Title: Spies, Lies, and Allies
By Lisa Brown Roberts
Genre: Y/A Contemporary Romance.

Year: 2018
Rate: 💥💥💥💥

Cute and funny. A lovely story about friendship and romance.
The book is about Laurel, a teenager working in her dad’s company, a place nothing like she expected but, where she would discover the true meaning of teamwork.
I enjoyed the reading. The narrative is good, and I can overlook some telling and repetitions because of the mention of wonderful movies that I love.
I liked the concept and definitely, the author has a wide acknowledge of teenager’s world. The pace, dialogues, and descriptions are great in most parts of the book. However, If I’m being honest, I had a hard time going through the first 20%. It wasn’t about the pace or the narrative, it was about the main character’s motivations and the settling of the story, I don’t think it was as strong as the rest of the book.
My other problem is the protagonist. She is so insecure and the weakest character in the story.  The secondary characters are fantastic, they aren’t what the reader would expect and that was what I liked the most, and of course, there is Carlos, the love interest, he’s everything that a teenager girl could ask in a friend and in a boyfriend.
This is my third book by the author and I found the same issue with the protagonist in her other books. However, I’ll keep reading Lisa Brown’s stories, I believe she can write a strong female lead as she writes her stories.
This book deserves four solid stars and I 100% recommended.

About the author:
Award-winning romance author Lisa Brown Roberts still hasn’t recovered from the teenage catastrophes of tweezing off both eyebrows, or that time she crashed her car into a tree while trying to impress a guy. It’s no wonder she loves to write romantic comedies.

Lisa’s books have earned praise from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and the School Library Journal. She lives in Colorado with her family, in which pets outnumber people. Connect with Lisa at www.lisabrownroberts.com.

Excerpt from Spies, Lies, and Allies:
“Let’s see where helping me on my project falls on this list.” Carlos picks up a pen and clicks it, eyeing me from underneath ridiculously long lashes.
Cautiously, I take a tiny step toward his desk so I can read the list.
“Number three.” I point to the napkin. “Teamwork.”
He nods and underlines the word. I notice he’s added numbers six through ten. Nothing is written next to those numbers, except for ten, next to which he’s drawn a smiley face.
“What’s that for?” I point to the smiley face. He leans back in his desk chair and grins up at me.
“Not sure yet.”
My heart throbs in my chest and my imagination is off and running, fantasizing about number ten.
Carlos points to number five: nicknames. “I think this is where we left off at lunch.” He clicks his pen repeatedly and I resist the urge to snatch it out of his hand. “I’d prefer not to be nicknamed for a pasta, but I gave you a cereal nickname, so…” He shrugs but keeps his eyes on mine.
“I…pasta…what?” He’s not making sense.
He bites his bottom lip, and I have no trouble picturing what will make me “smiley face” if we ever make it to number ten. Also, I’m pretty sure he’s a mind reader because his gaze drifts down to my lips, then back up to my eyes.
“The Manicotti. Who is it?” He glances across the room. “Elijah? He can be sort of cheesy.”
My mind analyzes his words, sliding them around like one of those puzzles where you have to move a string through twisted metal. And then it clicks.
“You read my notebook! You’re the one who—” Panic zings through me as I remember what I wrote about him, Carlos is trouble, and his editorial comment, True. Is Carlos adorable?
Apparently, I’m not the only spy around here.
“Why’d you pick this desk?” I’m desperate to change the subject.
“I like the view.”
“But it’s better by the windows.”
“Depends on which view we’re talking about.” He gives me a cryptic smile, one that makes my stomach dip. “Anyway, I saved your notebook. You’re lucky no one else read your notes.”
Mortified and defiant, I cross my arms over my chest. “You didn’t have to read it. You could’ve just returned it.”
“I was just checking to make sure you’d listed all of Mr.

Mantoni’s rules.”
“Uh huh.”
Across the room, Elijah stands up and stretches. He glances at us, an amused smirk twisting his lips like he knows something I don’t.
Carlos writes on the napkin again. Number six: healthy disagreement.
“You’re kidding, right?”
His responding grin packs more heat than it should.
“I think we’ve gone off track.” I’m proud of how calm I sound, even though my nerve endings are exploding like firecrackers.
